Blue Sky Green Field Wind Energy Center

Last week, I took these photographs of Blue Sky Green Field Wind Energy Center which is approximately 25 miles due West of our place. I did some preliminary research about it and found out this farm is capable of powering 36,000 avearage residential homes! It consists of 88 turbines scattered about the countryside. Although I am 100% behind wind power, I have to admit I would struggle with losing my precious view to these lumbering modern day wind mills, which stand 262ft. from ground to hub...the picture of the barn really puts their size into perspective.

  1. I want one. Then I can sell my extra power back to the power company and retire.

Did you see the Dirty Jobs episode where the host cleaned one of those things? LOL

    Pretty photos!

  2. Faith, actually yes, I do recall a portion of that episode. We are seriously considering this option, however, it is costly! A few issues back in Mother Earth News, there was a great article on wind generated power. I will see if I can find it and send you the link (if you're interested that is). The wind turbines for home use are much smaller. I think your neighbors may take issue with a 300ft. wind turbine, but hey..maybe not. You definitely could sell a bunch of power back to your power company if you had sole ownership of one of those big guys! LOL

  3. Up close I think your description of "lumbering" is accurate, but from afar I think they look quite elegant. As for "losing the precious view", consider what they are doing and rather than "losing" the view, consider it just changed. Most don't like change, but I don't consider wind turbines any more undesirable then power poles and lines that cut across the road and interrupt a glorious view, it's just I am so used to them as they have been here my entire life. I'm assuming that with the turbines on the farm, the farmer can continue farming without so many financial worries.

  4. KMB, you're right, they do look elegant from afar, and quite honestly, whomever designed them did a good job from an aesthetic point of view. You have a good point, the view did just change and considering the benefits, they definitely out weigh the negatives. Thanks for sharing that! BTW, how is your blog coming along? We're waiting with anticipation to check it out, so when it's up and running..please let us know!

Have a wonderful day..it's looking gorgeous outside up here in WI..hope it is where you are too! :-)

  5. I think I'll look into wind energy. We are building a new house and we haven't connected to the "grid" yet. Don't really want to, but, we need electric and we don't have much money to start out. Decisions, decisions. lol

  6. We have also been looking into wind energy but since we don't plan on staying here for more than 10 years we figure why bother. If I was in a home that I knew would be my forever home I would definitely do it. My state(Ohio) offers a few grants each year to home owners and businesses so if we decided to go with wind I would be applying for those. I know there are other states out there do this.

  9. Hey, if you planted some tulips underneath them they could become our national landmark! Really, they aren't ugly, and a little landscaping would help.

Thanks for stopping by my blog. And to answer your question - Jack is an official, full-fledged ankle biter and probably will be for several months to come. Puppies and kids - you gotta love em.

  10. SFG, hmmmm...I could have sworn that I responded to your comment..must have dreamed it :-) anyway...now is the best time if you're building. We read that your appliances need to be wired a bit different to accept the power source, but how I'm not sure.

  11. Sandy, very good point, wildflowers would look really cool too at the bases. One of them has a road to it directly off the main road...we might go to the base sometime and take a pic directly under looking straight up...could be cool with some special effects!!

  12. Tracey...makes sense...it is a large investment, not sure if you would get it back in the sell price.

  13. As far as I am concerned, when my neighbor started running his dogs and chickens all over my place, but shot my chickens that wondered onto his, he lost all say in whether I have a 300 foot windmill blade hanging over his roof. LOL

  14. Faith, that is terrible..what kind of a person would do that?? I agree...he deserves to see a 300 ft. windmill lumbering over his home...shame on him..he must be a very angry person....
